Fences in La Mirada

We offer and build wood, vinyl, aluminum, steel, composite, and glass fences. We install on top of walls, on slabs and in the ground.

Fences offer divisions between properties, and provide either solitude or openness contingent upon what is necessary. For example, openness might be required because of either a pool or a good view. Pool or sprinkler water and the humidity level in Southern California lets steel rust and corrode, so for openness the best answer is aluminum or vinyl. Steel fencing is often referred to as wrought iron, but that is an inaccurate term because wrought iron won’t corrode, whereas mild steel definitely does. Aluminum fencing has an identical diminutive outline as steel, however vinyl fencing will have larger members or outlines. Both aluminum & vinyl are excellent materials in the vicinity of pools because they do not decay or require painting even when left exposed to lots of moisture. Dark colors are not available in vinyl.

For solid fencing, composites or vinyl are favored because again they do not rot or deteriorate. White is commonplace for vinyl, although we have a very attractive tan vinyl with a texture making it distinct from the usual produced material.

Another pool fencing option is a detachable fence similar to the type manufactured by “Baby-loc”. This uses a netted material to keep young ones out and needs either fiberglass or aluminum poles that are put into fittings exactly placed in a concrete slab. Lastly, there is a separate dog guard fence system that initiates a shocking device on a dog collar. If the dog tries to cross a concealed fence line fixed by a condealed wire the dog will be deterred by an electrical shock.
Glass rails and fences are a final option, and they must be custom built.

Patio Covers in La Mirada

Pierce Construction & Repair provides and installs patio covers which are either water proof or for shade. For waterproof patio covers, we utilize metal, Alumawood, and wood. When it comes to shade covers, we utilize vinyl, wood, or canvas. Wood framing and shingles is done, but is usually not cost effective. Shade patios, when built out of wood, require painting which is a giant maintenance problem, so to minimize maintenance, Alumawood or vinyl patio covers are suggested.

Lots of the patio covers designed for clients in Orange County are designed for shade and involve lattice (2x2s) set evenly on the top. If the shade 2x2s are painted wood, they will need to be repainted in just a couple of years. This is very difficult, time consuming and expensive. That’s why, Alumawood or vinyl is recommended for patio covers. Nevertheless, since we get morning dew and some rain, solid water proof covers are also in style. In the case of a second story balcony, the same rule applies in that a water proof cover guards both the furnishings underneath in addition to the actual structure itself. Structural protection leads to much less repairs and maintenance.

Dry-rot is the main ingredient to wood damage in our neck of the woods, not termites. Termites can be killed, but dry-rot is classified as a fungus and it continues to reproduce and destroy wood. It must be either cut out or removed. Dry-rot will strike if water is left to pool in an area that doesn’t dry up prompltly. This can occur on top of horizontal planks, but particularly between wood joints. When building substructures, we prefer to use chemically treated “Green” lumber which repels dry-rot. From time to time we encase substructure support members with roofing type paper or vinyl to safeguard the supporting wood from moisture. We particularly like to refrain from using ornate moldings or edges that form gaps and spaces for moisture to get into and attack the wood. Many property owners let dirt and dust to build up so that the dirt actually touches reinforcement wood for either fences or patios. When rainwater, or water from a sprinkler is left to pool near a support base, it virtually ensures that the wood support will decay.

Another possibility, canvas awnings can be quite charming and functional for creating protection from the elements. Sunesta offers an assortment of styles and multiple colored fabrics. Awnings also come as stationary, or with the option of closing and opening either manually or at the touch of a button.
